Copper-roll printed cotton.
This is a 1998 reproduction of a 1789 piece printed by the Oberkampf factory, based on a drawing by Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745-1811).
The original drawing, however, differs from the final work. Its theme “Louis XVI, Protector of Religion” had to be modified after the early events of the French Revolution. Thus, Religion lost her crucifix and became Liberty. In the medallion, two cherubs were replaced by a view of the Bastille being demolished and a banner bearing the inscription “Louis XVI, Restorer of Liberty”. Thus aligned with modern tastes, the fabric could then be printed.
