“Music” sprayer

A “music sprayer” was used to dampen the fabrics before printing in order to adhere them to the printing table to ensure even coloring. A mix of water and gum arabic was used to make the spray.

This crude but effective sprayer was made from a Lyon pot and a hollow brass pipe cut off at the elbow joint. This tool is called a “music” sprayer because the printer created a whistling sound when blowing through the pipe.
