Pattern tracing

The tracer transfers the designs onto the block using oil (tracing) paper and a drypoint. The parts to be left in relief after engraving are painted with vermilion.

The woodblocks are composed of 4 or 5 layers of wood bonded together crosswise to prevent deformation. The portion to be engraved is made from pear-wood for its superior density, homogeneity and resistance to humidity.
