The roller printing system was invented in Manchester (UK) in 1808. A small steel cylinder is etched and cured. It is pressed onto a second steel cylinder which, after being cured in its turn, is used to engrave a roller or a copper plate. This technique spread rapidly from 1820 until the end of the 1950s, when it was replaced by photoengraving.
