This scale is used to determine the “titre”, i.e. the fineness of the thread. The unit of measurement used for silk is the denier. It indicates the weight in grams per 9,000 m of thread. For example, 9,000 meters of thread weighing 22 grams will have a titre of 22 deniers. The higher the denier, the thicker the silk.
