Thread by thread

Mechatronic design

This outfit features a mechatronic development applied to textiles. This discipline combines mechanics, computer science and electronics.

Through a partnership with the MINES Paris Tech engineering school, artist Jeanne Vicerial, designer and researcher, developed and patented a robotized process for custom-made clothing. This knitting process, similar to 3D printing, is inspired by muscle fibers and makes it possible to produce customized and personalized clothing, using a computer program that produces a pattern using a single continuous thread, without producing any waste or scraps.

“Ready-to-measure” is a new and interesting concept in the field of fashion, offering a compromise between made-to-measure and ready-to-wear fast-fashion, which is appealing for its low cost. The idea is to produce customized clothing at the same mechanical speed as ready-to-wear clothing but without the waste of overproduction and related environmental issues.
